Italy is dotted with small wineries. By way of comparison, the average size of a farm is 7 hectares in France, while in Italy it measures 1 hectare on average.


The most famous wine regions are Puglia, Veneto, Emilia Romagna and Sicily. In the North-West of Italy, Piedmont has around 40 appellations including some great wines such as Asti Spumante or Barolo. The black nebbiolo grape produces a tannic and fruity wine that can be kept for a very long time.


To the east of the North region, Merlot and Cabernet grape varieties give fruity and lively wines. In Tuscany, Chianti Classico is one of the wines classified as Vino Nobile Di Montalcino which also a famous red wine from Tuscany. In southern Italy, the Puglia region is the largest producer with almost 20% of all Italian bottles. Sicily has a lot of small productions and very good white grape varieties.
