About the winery

The Maugeri family returns to producing wine on the eastern slopes of Etna, in Milo, between two "contradas" (districts): Contrada Volpare and Contrada Praino, at 700 meters above sea level in the eastern part of Etna. Milo is famous for its white grapes, which is why in 1968 the Etna DOC statute established that only Milo whites could bear the "Superiore" designation. Here, the microclimate is ideal for producing white wines that have the potential to age beautifully. Average rainfall in Milo is double that of the rest of Sicily. Its exposures are mostly east-facing, and the climate is very humid, open to sea breezes that blow directly onto the vineyards, keeping the vines dry. The vineyards are cultivated organically with great care, as is the work in the cellar. The goal is to maintain low yields to ensure the highest quality. The continuity of over 20 km of dry-stone lava walls marks the 7-hectare property, an amphitheater of fertile volcanic soils. With these unique conditions, we produce five different wines from a single estate, each designed to represent the terroir of Milo. The wines produced are: Etna Bianco Superiore Contrada Volpare, Etna Bianco Superiore Contrada Volpare Frontebosco, Etna Bianco Superiore Contrada Praino Frontemare (100% Carricante), Catarratto IGT Terre Siciliane, and Etna Rosato Contrada Volpare from Mascalese grapes.

The project, revitalized by the Maugeri family, is now led by a distinctly female leader: Carla (with her sisters Michela and Paola, and their father Renato) has transformed a challenging agricultural heritage—slopes, dry stone walls, bush-trained vineyards—into a platform for a contemporary stylistic identity, founded on transparency, saline density, and verticality. From the Milo Forest to the Ionian Sea, everything on the farm is built around the dialogue between light and shade, sea air and the breath of the forest.
