About the host

Barbaterre is located within the evocative scenery of the lands of Matilda, a hilly area between Parma and Reggio Emilia, which combines an unmistakable historical legacy with a landscape of unique environmental richness. It is a land that has maintained a strong and lasting bond with Countess Matilde of Canossa, whose legacy can be measured in the numerous castles and manors still present today, evidence of the political and religious centrality of these places during the Middle Ages.
Our vineyards are located on predominantly limestone and clayey soils, rich in mineral substances and well exposed to the south on reliefs characterized by significant slopes. These characteristics are combined with a peculiar microclimate characterized by constant ventilation and good temperature range to ensure that the grapes ripen regularly and uniformly.

We cultivate almost ten hectares of vineyards in which there are traditional varieties of the Reggio Emilia hills such as Lambrusco Grasparossa, Salamino and Malbo Gentile, as well as Marzemino, which has always been a welcome guest in these areas. Some non-native varieties such as pinot noir, cabernet sauvignon and sauvignon blanc have adapted perfectly to the local terroir and have become an integral part of Barbaterre.

The place is very beautiful, in early and summer it will be wonderful: breathtaking views of the Reggio Emilia hills. The welcome was delightful, informal but very professional. The wine tastings and brunch were well worth it: top gnocco, cured meats and tortelli.
