Discovering Arnaldo Pomodoro's Carapace: a journey into the world of art and wine.
A visit to the Castelbuono estate is a journey into the world of art and wine. Its carapace is the first sculpture in the world in which people live and work, it is a casket of great wines, Sagrantino and Rosso di Montefalco, the true soul of Umbria.
During the guided tour you will be shown Arnaldo Pomodoro's Carapace project, the history of the Lunelli family, winemaking practices and information on the aging of our wines.
A guided wine tasting will follow in front of a beautiful and evocative panorama.

About the host

Fascinated by an ancient and almost mystical land such as Umbria and by a wine of extraordinary power and longevity such as Sagrantino, the Lunelli family acquired the Castelbuono Estate, 30 hectares of vineyards in the municipalities of Bevagna and Montefalco, in 2001. Their efforts were concentrated initially on the vineyards, now converted to organic, with new plants and the enhancement of existing ones through a complex clone selection project. In 2003 Montefalco Sagrantino was born, followed the following year by Montefalco Rosso.
However, there was a need for a new cellar and the Lunelli family, by virtue of a solid and old friendship with Arnaldo Pomodoro, one of the greatest contemporary artists, proposed to him to create it. The Master accepted with enthusiasm and after the first inspection he had already imagined the project.
The “Carapace” – as Pomodoro wanted to call the cellar – required six years of work and was inaugurated and open to the public, for visits and tastings, in June 2012. It is a unique work, which challenges the boundaries between sculpture and architecture. It is the first sculpture in the world in which people live and work, a unique work in which art and nature, sculpture and wine interact, underlining the exceptional nature of both the container and the content.
A signature cellar for signature wines.
