Rioja Winery San Asensio
Award-winning winery Best Wine Tourism Experience in Spain 2016. Bodegas Lecea is a journey to the origins of Rioja wine through a tour of the old Barrio de las Bodegas de San Asensio. In this neighborhood there are more than 350 family wineries excavated in the rock in the 16th century, all with production up to 50 years ago and abandoned today. Bodegas Lecea is the only one that still has four connected and working cellar caves, with a labyrinthine route of more than 300 underground meters. It still makes and ferments its wines at a constant temperature in concrete vats, in the same way as it was done in the 16th century. The winery preserves the old production traditions such as the treading of the grapes and pressing them in the hand press for the production of its most special wine "Corazón de Lago", a carbonic maceration wine, like those that were drunk before mechanization of the cellars. The guided tour lasts approximately one hour and is carried out in groups with a specialized guide. During the tour, the old work tools will be shown, such as the goat skin to transport the wine, the pitcher and wooden vats. A visit to go back in time, to spread the ancestral traditions of La Rioja, to recover our roots and fully understand the winemaking process from the 16th century to the present day. A journey through time to understand our origins.
