About the host

The history of Caves Velhas is inseparable from the history of João Camilo Alves, who in his time was one of the most prosperous and visionary wine entrepreneurs in Portugal, taking risks and applying avant-garde measures for the time.
João Camilo Alves, started by founding Adegas Camilo Alves in 1881, a pioneer company in the commercialization of quality wine brands in Portugal.

In 1939, the Caves Velhas brand was founded by João Júlio Camilo Alves, grandson of the founder, a great entrepreneur and above all strategist, who dared to expand his family's business through the implementation of branded wines.
In the historic building of Caves Velhas, located in the center of Bucelas, capital of Arinto, we can appreciate this same story. This building is being recovered in order to allow visits, tastings and other wine events, where you can appreciate wines with stories and memories.

At Quinta do Boição, acquired by Caves Velhas in 1989, we can find strains over 70 years old, mostly using the Arinto variety in its strains.
The Arinto variety, originally from the Bucelas region, where it has the greatest genetic variability, finds its terroir of choice here, producing wines with a lot of minerality and high natural acidity, making the wine last over time without losing the strong points so characteristic of this variety. region.
Sustainable and environmentally friendly agriculture is practiced in addition to a biodiversity marked by a great wealth of fauna and flora.
