Blois sits right in the middle of the Loire Valley, and that geography is basically the whole point of stopping here. Three of the region's most famous ch\u00e2teaux, Chambord, Cheverny and Chaumont, are all within a 20-minute drive, which makes this walkable little city a genuinely smart base camp rather than just another stop on the list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Blois is best explored on foot in about half a day:<\/strong> start at the Ch\u00e2teau Royal de Blois, cross to the Maison de la Magie, then wander the old town up to Saint-Louis Cathedral and the Denis Papin staircase for a panorama over the Loire. This is the reason most people first hear of Blois, and it earns the reputation: the ch\u00e2teau packs four centuries of French architecture into one courtyard, from Gothic halls to the Renaissance wing built by Jacques Gabriel for King Louis XII and the Fran\u00e7ois I staircase where Catherine de' Medici once lived. Plan on 1.5 to 2 hours inside, tickets run around \u20ac15, and the courtyard alone (free to peek into) gives a sense of scale before you commit to the full visit. The city's designation as a French Town of Art and History makes this the natural starting point for the rest of the old town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
